Our Blog - North-east Spain trip 2022

We decided to try to get through a little bit more of Spain, since it is so close. The trip was about 10 days and took us down the Mediterranean coast from France down to Valencia, and then we turned back inland through Zaragoza and the Huesca region, then back home through the Pyrenées. Here is a view of our routing. You will notice that we skipped Barcelona, since we had already visited the city several times.

Part 1

In general, we try to break up the trip so that we don't spend more than a couple hours in the car at any one time. Not only is this good for us, but it is also good to let Lucy out as well. Our first stop was at the Leucate Plage for Lucy to play on the beach for an hour, and then fresh oysters for lunch at one of the many cabanas that are right on the water.

Our next stop, and first overnight stay, was in Cadaqués and the Salvador Dali house. It was a very typical seaside tourist town with lots of bars and restaurants. We stayed about a 15 minute walk from town, right next to the Salvador Dali house (which we toured). Nice place, had its' own little beach and great parking!

Next morning, we drove directly to Girona to visit the medieval town, cathedral, and walk along the fortified walls.

A morning stop at Tossa de Mar before one of our longer drive, bypassing Barcelona to get to Sitges.

Some wine tasting and a stop at the The Ferreres Aqueduct near the town of El Vendrell.

Part 2

We spent a couple of days in Tarragona to visit the old city and a go by a few of the old Roman remains. The weather didn't cooperate all that much, but we still were able to see most of what we wanted to.

Another wine tasting in the town of Gandesa, and then the afternoon in Tortosa before making our way to a little beach town to stay overnight. The next morning, we had some beach time for Lucy before leaving. The beach here was interesting (we were a little South of town) because the beach is down below a cliff and there are only a couple access points. It is also quite rocky ... lots of little stones ... but Lucy enjoyed it anyway.

Then two days in Valencia before turning back Northwards.

We spent a couple days in Zaragoza, checking out the various historical buildings and churches.

We spent only a couple hours in Huesca, seeing the Cathedral there. We also got to peek at the Castle of Montearagón, although we couldn't get too close as the road was closed due to work going on.

From there, we headed almost straight North. We did a few wine tastings and then caught the tunnel back through the Pyrenees into France.
