Our Blog - Narbonne Plage, France

Lucy likes to play on the beach but not in the summer. Two reasons really ... too hot and too many people! But in February ... the beach is empty except for other people with dogs. Most beaches say "no dogs" but almost everyone ignores that in the middle of the winter. We are conscientious and make sure we clean up after her but other than that, it is normally no harm, no foul. Last year, we rented a great little 1-bedroom apartment that is just 5 minutes from the beach, which is perfect for us. It is always immaculately clean, they are very welcoming (even have a puppy bed and puppy bowls for us) and it comes with private covered parking, which is not required in the winter but nice to have. We texted with the owner, Céline, and it was open for this weekend, so we popped down to the Med for the weekend.

On the way down, we stopped at the little medieval village of Saint-Felix-Lauragais for a look around and a bite to eat for lunch. It was REALLY foggy so some of the views weren't as nice as they should have been. Then it was a short little trek to the beach.

They are doing a LOT of work during the winter, so a few more things were closed than would normally be during the off-season, but the neighborhood bakery was open for breakfast and a couple restaurants were open for dinner. Pretty much everything we needed. The bakery had these really cute little pig-desserts!

Mornings and afternoons, Lucy got to play on the beach. We grabbed a couple videos of her this time....If you have the sound up, you can hear how windy it was!

While we didn't exactly plan the trip with this in mind, we were lucky enough to take advantage of Free-Museum-Sunday when all of the public museums in France are FREE (1st Sunday of every month). While Lucy took a nap, we drove into Narbonne and walked through the Narbonne Via Museum which is a newly-opened museum (2021) that houses lots of artifacts from the Roman era in Narbonne. It was better than expected and I think we will go back again on another trip down here. Lucy didn't seem to mind napping on the couch during the afternoon.

I took a picture of this because it was just really interesting. We have been to this restaurant before and decided to go again because they have great food. It is called Chez Anna, Une Table au Sud and it is a couple minutes from the apartment. She has a "Liégeois" de Foie Gras, which piqued my interest. A "liégeois" is normally a dessert with either a chocolate or coffee-flavored mousse topped with whipped cream and a chocolate sauce. Here, you can see that it is served just like you would think for the dessert, but it is actually the starter. It has foie gras that has been whipped into the consistency of a chocolate mousse, topped with a cream that looks like whipped cream but is savory, then a drizzle of a foie gras sauce (I think that is what it was) that looks like the chocolate syrup. It was REALLY good!
