Our Blog - Carantec, France

Carantec is a seaside resort in the bay of Morlaix, with white sandy beaches and interesting islands. One of the more interesting islands is Ile de Callot, which is linked to the town of Carantec by a road that is under water during high tide (a submersible causeway). The signs are pretty clear and they post the hours where the road is passable.

The population is growing here, but mainly with older people as it is an attractive seaside resort for retirees. It also seems to be very popular from a 2nd home point of view, as almost 50% of the housing in town are secondary homes.

The Église Saint-Carantec dates from 1867 and is in the neo-Gothic style, built on the site of the old 16th century church. The monumental gateway is actually from the neighboring manor of Kerangoaget, which dates from the 17th century. You can see the bell tower here is a unique design compared to church towers from the South of France, but this style is quite normal in Brittany, as you will see as you go through my blogs.

Inside, you can pick out the high Gothic vaults and the pointed Gothic arches. Like most churches in Brittany, the ceiling is made from wood (not stone) and painted blue. You can see the nave and the two side aisles, but it doesn't have side chapels.

Only a couple stained-glass windows: the 6 lancet windows in the choir and one that shows the Last Supper.

The organ and its case is not as highly carved as some, but it fits in quite well with the blue painted trim.

Here we have a couple pictures from the town, sitting up on a plateau, down to the water and bay below.
