Our Blog - Chamonix, France

Chamonix, or Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, sits north of Mont Blanc, and is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. As the highest European mountain west of Russia, Mont Blanc attracts mountain climbers in addition to all of the skiers that come to catch one of the various cable cars up the mountains. One of the cable cars, built in 1955, goes up to the Aiguille du Midi at 12,605 ft. To this date, it is the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world. This was *not* the cable car we took!

Most people may not know this, but it was the site of the first Winter Olympics, held in 1924. We didn't do much in town other than have lunch and take a few pictures of the Alps which surround the town.

This is Saint-Michel Church, and if you look behind and to the left of the cross on the bell tower (right-hand side), that line of white is actually a waterfall with the water coming from the melting snow.
