Our Blog - Montaigut-le-Haut, France

The village of Montaigut-le-Haut is yet another hilltop village. It was founded in the 11th century when a castle was built. There isn't much left of the medieval village on the top of the hill, and now the town includes several other hamlets that flow down the hill and into the valley. There is a city gate and some old buildings on the two streets of the town. As with all medieval towns, there is also a church, this time the Romanesque church of Saint-Blaise.

The church wasn't open, so only a couple exterior pictures. The first church was constructed here in the 11th century although from what I can tell, this building was originally built in the 15th century. It was in pretty bad state before the French revolution and then part of it was ruined by the revolutionists before a fire in 1810. The village was rebuilt it in the 19th century.

You can see how the village goes down the hill, and you can get a peek at the rugby field at the bottom of the hill (upper-right of the photo).

Not the best pictures, but this is one of the gates of the medieval fortification wall from the 13th century. The first was a fairly poor attempt to get a picture of the outside of the gate without actually walking down the hill and exiting the town.

We did not walk up to the castle since it is just ruins and not open to the public.
